Editor’s Scribbles

money102Hello fellow Chasers and a warm welcome to the last issue of June.

I know you’ve been craning your necks out for our Penny Pincher issue. And I’m not going to disappoint you (as if I ever do! LOL).

But first I got to tell you about my shameless food binge of a weekend. While entertaining guests from out of town, it’s incredible how food unwittingly finds its way into your mouth when you come up for air between a couple of good laughs. As a result, I gained two whole pounds from lunch Friday through dinner Sunday!!

Looks like I’m not through with food yet, even today’s article is about food. Note the last point about never shopping on an empty stomach. I always end up buying chocolate when I’m hungry, and I don’t even eat chocolate ordinarily LOL. See what I mean?

Okay, enough about me. Thanks for staying with us, I love having you around. Have yourself a fantastic weekend and I’ll see you back here soon 2_smile04.

Eat Well on a Budget

by Barb Keck

Eating properly for health on a limited budget is always a challenge. One of the biggest money gobbling culprits is ready made processed and packaged foods and too many trips for fast food. Although they’re quick neither of these ways are cost effective.

When it comes to shopping on a shoestring and planning great tasting menus at home you’ll be surprised how well you can eat following these simple guidelines.

10 healthy ways to keep food costs within budget…

Make three meals a week without meat and watch your food bill drop. You won’t even notice the meat is missing when you experiment and combo flavorful foods for meals. It’s easier than you think. Include other forms of protein to complete your required nutrition.

Cook regular rice it only takes 10 minutes longer than Minute Rice (which actually takes 5 minutes) and it’s half the cost. This works for many other products as well.

Left over rice, corn or other vegetables? Add it to tomato soup or any other favorite soup the next day.

Cook (boil, bake or microwave) enough potatoes to fry or prepare in any other favorite potato dish for your next meal

Shop from the outside aisles – this is where most of the non-processed foods are. The inner aisles of grocery stores are all packaged and cost more

When your favorite vegetables come in season, buy lots. Peppers are easy to freeze – no blanching required, just cut in slices, bag them and freeze them. Prices can be 1/3 of what the out of season vegetable costs.

To avoid throwing out food you haven’t used make a plan for the week that includes the foods in your fridge that need to be used before spoiling. This also takes the guess work out of what to have for dinner or lunch every day.

Cut your juice down with water. Most juices are heavy with sugar or glucose. Using this idea can make a can of juice last twice as long and cut your sugar intake as well.

Plan your weekly menus with tasty meals from your favourite recipes that use inexpensive ingredients. You will be amazed at how this plan helps avoid fast food meals.

And of course never shop when you’re hungry!

Following these 10 ideas will make a big difference to your food bill at the end of each month. Remember there are many meals you can add to your meal plans that won't take much longer than quick cooking foods which cost more.

Decorating the Bathroom - Dress Your Mess for Less

by Joey Lewitin

The bathroom may be the hardest room to decorate. Its use and nature make the room decorative uninspiring, and its limited size and necessity of function make it difficult to add very much.

Further, making a major change to the room’s décor generally requires huge sums of money, when you consider the expense of changing tiled floors or walls, or replacing existing fixtures such as showers and sinks. However, there are a few thrifty things you can do to turn your bathroom from an eyesore into a place of decorative elegance.

The first thing you have to do is decide what color range you can use. If the bathroom has existing features such as ceramic tiling or fixtures, you have to choose any other piece you bring in to match those colors that are already there.

This is only a slight stifle to your creativity though, as there are an unlimited number of shades and colors you can match up with others. Even if you don’t like the original colors of the room, you can always balance them out with opposite colors in your décor.

The easiest way to decorate a bathroom is by using fabric coverings. You can throw carpets down to cover up boring tiles and add some color to the floor. They will also soak up water and help prevent slippage.

If your toilet looks out of date, get a seat cover in a funky color and turn it into an artistic eye catcher. Or go the whole way and get a whole new toilet seat. They are relatively inexpensive, and they allow you to change the look and feel of a fairly permanent piece. Here you will have to find a balance of comfort and style.

Bathrooms are functional areas, and they need to stay organized. Choose your containers with an eye towards color and style, and you will be adding natural décor touches to the room. There are soap dishes, toilet paper rings, and toothbrush boxes which can be purchased in matching sets.

Buying items in the same or similar colors will give the bathroom a finished look that shows its appearance was planned with an attention to detail. In a room that is as small as the bathroom, one wrong color can unbalance the whole effect.

Bathroom accessories such as towels and washcloths are only temporary residents of the bathroom, and will be cycled in and out at various intervals. Buying a few matching linen sets allows you to change the look of the bathroom every few days.

You can get a set in black for when you’re in a dark mood, and a set in red when you’re feeling particularly sensual. Always keep an eye on the rest of the colors in the room however, and try not to purchase anything that will clash with the colors already present.

The shower curtain is one of the most important décor pieces that you can easily change in your bathroom. They are prominently displayed, usually taking up a large section of the visual area in a room.

This is the piece that can pull the whole bathroom together, so choose it carefully as every other color you bring into the room will have to match with this piece.

When it comes to bathrooms, take what you were given, and make it something that is your own. Play off of the features that are already in the room, balancing out what you don’t like and reinforcing what you do. By making small touches you can make the décor of any bathroom fit your style.

Penny Pinching Tip

Hey, nice to see y’all at this here “Water Cooler”. I’ve got a great tip here from Kristin Wilson that I’ve been saving for our Penny Pincher issue.

She writes: “My best tip is to buy the Sunday paper with the coupons. Clip coupons and shop at the grocery store you have a 'coupon card' at. They usually will allow you to use your card for the discounts PLUS take the clipped coupon discount too! I've saved tons doing this!

Thanks, Kristin and those of you who wrote in with your feedback about this ezine. You can view these on the testimonials page.

If you’ve sent in suggestions for improvement but don’t see them posted here, it’s because I’m still mulling over them and looking at them from a feasibility point of view.
